West Nile Virus Detected in Branford Mosquitoes

State testing found West Nile virus in mosquitoes trapped in Branford, according to a report published August 4. No human cases have been linked to the finding. Use EPA-registered repellent, cover up at dusk and dawn, and dump standing water from birdbaths, gutters, and plant saucers where mosquitoes breed.

Main Street Construction Shifts East Toward Harrison Avenue

Crews are wrapping up the Laurel Street intersection and the sidewalk in front of Wells Fargo, then pushing the Main Street Reconstruction work east toward Harrison Avenue over the next two weeks. Expect the active zone — and the lane shifts and sidewalk detours that come with it — to move a block east.

Branford Public Schools has posted its 2026-2027 back-to-school hub: district calendar, PK-12 registration, bus routes, the parent portal, and lunch menus. This Week in Branford History

Reverend Abraham Pierson and Branford's Exodus to Newark — 1666–1667

In the 1660s, a theological quarrel emptied much of Branford's meetinghouse and sent a caravan of Puritan families south to found what is now Newark, New Jersey. At the center of it stood the Reverend Abraham Pierson, Branford's minister, who could not accept the more permissive membership rules of the Half-Way Covenant then spreading through New England's churches.
