For nearly two centuries after its 17th-century founding, Branford covered a much larger stretch of the Connecticut shoreline and the hills reaching inland. In 1831, those inland farming districts split off to form the separate town of North Branford, redrawing a boundary that had already been shaped for generations by distance, geography, and the practical difficulty of reaching the meetinghouse on the Green.
