Hurricane Carol Roars Ashore Along the Sound — August 1954

Late August 1954 brought one of the most destructive storms in Connecticut's twentieth-century memory. Hurricane Carol swept up the Atlantic, crossed eastern Long Island, and slammed into the Connecticut shoreline on the morning of August 31 — a fast-moving Category 3 that caught much of the coast off guard. From Stony Creek to Short Beach, Branford residents woke to shrieking winds, toppled elms, blown-out windows, and a storm surge that pushed Long Island Sound over seawalls and into shorefront cottages.
