The Harrison House: Three Centuries on Main Street

The Harrison House on Main Street has stood since 1724, when Nathaniel Harrison 2nd (1692–1760) built it on land deeded from his father, Nathaniel Harrison 1st (1658–1727). The Branford Historical Society keeps the family's full story at branfordhistoricalsociety.org.

This Week in Branford History

Blackstone Memorial Library Dedicated in June 1896 — June 1896

On June 17, 1896, the James Blackstone Memorial Library was formally dedicated on Main Street, a gift to the town from railroad executive Timothy Beach Blackstone in memory of his father, James Blackstone, a lifelong Branford resident. Designed by Chicago architect Solon S. Beman in the Classical Revival style and modeled in spirit on the Erechtheion in Athens, the marble building features a rotunda with murals by Oliver Dennett Grover depicting scenes from literature. More than a century later, it still serves as Branford’s public library.
