This Week in Branford History

Stony Creek's Pink Granite Helped Build the Statue of Liberty's Pedestal — 1884–1886

In the 1880s, distinctive pink granite quarried from the ledges of Stony Creek was shipped down Long Island Sound to help construct the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, dedicated in 1886. The same warm-toned stone from Branford's shoreline quarries also went into landmarks like the base of Grant's Tomb and pieces of Yale's Vanderbilt Hall, making this small village's bedrock a quiet contributor to some of America's most recognizable structures. The quarries remained active for generations and are still worked on a smaller scale today.

New Liquor Permit Hints at Ownership Shift at Woodwinds

A new state liquor permit for Woodwinds at 25 School Ground Road takes effect August 30, listing Allegre Banquets Inc. as the holder. Because Connecticut typically issues fresh permit numbers only for new businesses or ownership changes — renewals keep the old number — the filing suggests something is shifting at the longtime banquet venue.
