This Week in Branford History

Summer on the Thimble Islands: Branford's Gilded Age Resort — Late 19th century (c. 1870s–1890

As late June ushers in another Thimble Islands season, it's worth remembering that Stony Creek's rocky archipelago was one of the Connecticut shore's most fashionable summer retreats in the late 1800s. Grand hotels such as the Thimble Island House and the Stony Creek House drew visitors from New York and New Haven, who arrived by rail and were ferried out to cottages built on islands like Money, Governor, and Cut-in-Two. The era also gave rise to enduring local lore, including the story that showman P.T. Barnum's celebrated performer General Tom Thumb summered among the islands.

The Branford Land Trust holds its annual Environmental Day Camp on Aug. 19 — an awesome experience for children ages 5–9, packed with hands-on activities: tide pools, nature crafts, woodland exploration, and wildlife rehabilitation. Age requirements and signup at branfordlandtrust.org.
