This Week in Branford History

The 1938 Hurricane Reshapes Branford's Shoreline — September 21, 1938

On the afternoon of September 21, 1938, the storm that came to be known as the Great New England Hurricane — or the "Long Island Express" — barreled up the coast with almost no warning and slammed into the Connecticut shoreline. Branford's exposed necks and island communities, from Short Beach and Indian Neck out through Pine Orchard and Stony Creek, took the brunt of a storm surge that arrived at high tide and rewrote the town's waterfront in a matter of hours.
