A new package store, Cask & Cork, is headed to 1043 West Main Street. State records show a fresh liquor permit issued to Seaside Wine LLC, effective August 22, 2026 — a sign the shop is either brand-new or under new ownership.

Cosgrove Shelter Takes In 32 Cats at Once, Needs Help

The Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter is asking Branford for help after an unexpected intake of 32 cats overwhelmed its food, medical, litter, and foster capacity. Neighbors who can donate, foster, or adopt should contact the shelter directly.

This Week in Branford History

From Totoket to Branford: The Town's 17th-Century Founding — 1644

Long before it appeared on any English map, the land between the East River and the Branford River was known as Totoket, part of the territory of the Mattabesec-speaking peoples of the Connecticut shoreline. In the 1640s, settlers moving out from the New Haven Colony established a small farming and coastal community there, and within a generation they had renamed it Branford — an English rendering of Brentford, the town on the Thames just west of London. That colonial beginning still shapes the geography of the modern town: the Green, the meetinghouse site, and the network of old roads all descend from those first decades of English settlement.
